Welcome to Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Welcome to Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, a region in southeastern France that feels like a giant playground for the soul. Whether you’re a bon vivant (lover of the good life) or an adrenaline junkie, this area offers the perfect séjour (staycation) through some of Europe’s most dramatic landscapes.

A glimpse into history

The region’s history is a blend of Roman foundations and medieval power. Lyon, the regional capital, was once the capital of the Gauls under the Roman Empire (Lugdunum). To the west, the Auvergne province is defined by its ancient volcanic past and the rugged, dark stone architecture of the Bourbons. To the east, the Savoie region has a distinctive identity, having only officially become part of France in 1860, which explains its unique “alpine” cultural touch.

Description and Nature

If you're planning a trip here, prepare for extremes. The region is home to Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe, and the Chaîne des Puys, a stunning UNESCO-listed belt of dormant volcanoes.

Alps: High-altitude glaciers, turquoise lakes (like Annecy and Bourget), and world-class ski resorts.

Auvergne: Lush, rolling green hills and volcanic craters that look like something out of a fantasy novel.

Rhône Valley: Famous for its sun-drenched vineyards and the winding Rhône River.

Gastronomy: The land of cheese

Wake up your appetite. This region is the undisputed star of French gastronomy.

Regional specialties

Fondue & Tartiflette: Melted Alpine cheese masterpieces with plenty of Reblochon and Comté.

Puy lentils: Auvergne's "green caviar", grown in volcanic soil.

Lyon Bouchon food: Massive dishes like Quenelles (pike dumplings) and Saucisson brioche.

Regional cheeses: St. Nectaire, Cantal and Bleu d'Auvergne - a cheese lover's paradise.

Activities: From mountain peaks to pedals

Whether it's summer or winter, you won't be bored.

Winter sports: Skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing in the "Three Valleys".

Hiking and cycling: Visit the legendary mountain passes of the Tour de France.

Thermal spas: Relax in the volcanic hot springs of Vichy or Volvic.

Paragliding: Especially popular over Lake Annecy for a bird's-eye view of the mountains.

Festivals and Culture

Fête des Lumières (Lyon): Every December, the city is transformed into a glowing masterpiece with light installations on every monument.

Annecy International Animation Film Festival: The world's largest event for animation fans.

Jazz à Vienne: An incredible jazz festival held in a majestic ancient Roman amphitheatre.
